Real Wedding Mackenzie and Ted

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, August 09, 2017

What an amazing wedding weekend Mackenzie and Ted created! Their guests were truly in for a treat throughout the entire weekend of events. Guests arrived at the Inn at Harbour Town and immediately were greeted by a glass of champagne, Welcome Sign designed by Emily McCarthy and treats available in the lobby. Mackenzie and Ted kicked off their wedding weekend by having a tented welcome reception on the Inn terrace offering warm pretzels, bourbon and champagne infused marshmallows for s'mores, fresh popped popcorn by Palmetto Kettle Corn and many more treats! Yum!

The ceremony took place on the 18th Lawn of Harbour Town Golf links adjacent to the lighthouse, the Groom's favorite landmark! A Floral Affair created a ceremony focal that consisted of two floral arrangements filled with oyster shells to tie in the beautiful backdrop of the Calibogue sound. Mackenzie's adorable nieces and nephew's fashionably entered the ceremony by being pulled down the aisle in a handcrafted wooden boat. How cute are they?! The angelic sound of Voices of El Shaddai choir rang in guests ears as the newlyweds walked down the aisle.

Guests followed the powerful sound of the choir through the Harbour and to the Clubhouse for cocktail hour on the Veranda. Sea Pines delicious hors d'oeuvre were passed and martinis were flowing through a lighthouse ice luge. Mackenzie and Ted had to put up with a little bit of rain during cocktail hour to get a rainbow and look how stunning the photo turned out!

One thing we found extra touching about the day is how Mackenzie and Ted tied in their strong family bond throughout the day. All of their Bridal Party consisted of family members, including Mackenzie's Matron of Honor, her sweet Mother. Mrs. Grider gave the best MOH speech ever. She found a book she wrote to Mackenzie when she was younger titled "50 Things I Must Tell My Daughter" and read some inserts aloud. Including "Make sure you marry someone tall, dark, and handsome!" And Mackenzie sure did! Mrs. Grider finished her speech by having Sea Pines butler passed Bloody Mary's, Mackenzie's fave!

Sol fusion had guests dancing all night on a custom navy and gold dance floor made by Party Tables. At the end of the night guests showered Mackenzie and Ted with confetti as they exited. But... the night was not quite over! Guests entered the Inn where the After Party took place. As guests went to lay their head on their pillows they had one more treat waiting for them. A "Just Married" cookie with a hand written note from Mackenzie and Ted. What a sweet ending to a wonderful evening!

Incorporating Low Country into Weddings

Spencer Special Events - Tuesday, July 11, 2017

One of the best parts of the wedding planning process is getting to know the bride and groom. Often times the wedding party is not from South Carolina, so we like to find out why they chose the Low Country to host their wedding celebration. Family holidays or vacations may have brought them to the coast when growing up, but it is usually the natural beauty of the Low Country that draws them back to the area for their special day. Aspects of the low country can easily be incorporated into your own wedding day whether near or far from the southern beaches that Spencer Special Events calls home.

Use of oak tree designs, local maps of the area, and palmetto tree details to include a touch of the Low Country on your invitations and stationery.

Special features such as natural driftwood arches at the altar and local gospel choirs bring a unique touch of the Low Country to your ceremony.

Rustic barrel cocktail tables, southern hors d'oeuvres, sea-inspired napkins, along with starfish and oyster escort cards clearly bring the Low Country's charm to your cocktail hour.

Low Country inspired reception details can include nautical rope lighting features, palm frond mantle displays, southern cuisine signage, and palmetto tree monogrammed dance floors.

Floral details that use oyster shells and Spanish moss effortlessly reflect Low Country trends.

Low Country inspiration can even be incorporated on your wedding cake by adding magnolia tree blooms and oyster shells as a special detail.

The natural beauty of our local area is what brings brides and grooms to the Low Country for their wedding celebration. Features that make the Low Country unique can effortlessly be included in any and every part of your wedding day. From oyster shells and Spanish moss to southern blooms and cuisine, the details of the South can make your special day a Low Country wedding dream.

Engagement Photos

Spencer Special Events - Tuesday, March 21, 2017

We can't help but have a huge smile on our face when we look at these engagement photos! Kathryn and Mark are just the cutest couple and so in love! We are so excited for their fabulous Spring wedding at Montage Palmetto Bluff. Jennings King of Jennings King Photography brilliantly captured their sophistication as well as endearing and playful personality through these photos. The pictures were taken in Charleston, South Carolina. Engagement sessions can be such treasured time together and create little memories for a lifetime. Jennings kindly shared her insight on engagement sessions!

SSE: Based on Kathryn and Mark's personality, what did you try to capture? Jennings: Many times it is the first time meeting the couples. So I try to "interview" the couple as well to get to know them better. I had never met Kathryn and Mark, so much of the beginning of the day was understanding what they wanted to get from the session. I usually want to know a couple's agenda first before I start to work on my own. An engaged couple is usually full of happiness and love, and  that is what I wanted to capture between these two. They wanted to make sure I captured the atmosphere in addition to themselves. A lot of times the atmosphere and setting tell a story too.  SSE: What do you enjoy about engagement sessions? Jennings: I love people and especially getting to know people. With my background in sales, it is important to me that they feel comfortable with me and trust me. The conversation just flows during the session. This is the "trial" run prior to the wedding day. There are certain things I may also copy or reproduce on the wedding day, and this is just a chance to practice that.
SSE: What would your advice be for couples on the fence about engagement photos? Jennings: If you are an out of town bride, I highly recommend it. Getting to know your photographer on a more personal level just makes your day that much smoother and natural. I also really suggest doing them if the Groom is more timid at getting his picture taken. It will just ease his mind for the wedding day. It really isn't all that bad. All the Grooms after the session say, "That wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be!".  SSE: What would you recommend couples to wear during the session? Jennings: Complimentary colors to one another. Comfort is key! A bright pop of color is always nice especially in the spring or summer months.  SSE: How far out would you recommend couples to schedule an engagement session?  Jennings: It depends on if they will use a photo for their save the date cards. If so, then the earlier the better. In most cases the window is 6-11 months prior to the wedding.
SSE: If a couple does not have a location in mind, what would you recommend?  Jennings: Location is key, if the couple doesn't have any significant location themselves, then outdoors is ideal in shaded areas not the high heat. I usually try to shoot towards the end of the day 2 hours prior to sunset, the golden light is so pleasing. Indoors with large windows and lighting is also a great option. With Kathryn and Mark - we shot in The Darling Oyster Bar, in downtown Charleston, because the couple wanted a restaurant scene that was cool with lots of natural light. They both love food & wine - so it was a perfect setting for them.  SSE: Any other advise for couples about to get their engagement photos?  Jennings: Have fun with it, it's a time to learn about your photographer. The more you enjoy it, the better your wedding day will be!

Baby Shower

Spencer Special Events - Tuesday, January 03, 2017

Put a bunch of event pros in a room celebrating a director of food and beverage having a baby and you get one sophisticated baby shower! We had a blast celebrating our dear friend and new Mama, Erica Pepper at Berkeley Hall Plantation.

Erica's darling friends organized such a lovely afternoon with a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star theme. When guests arrived they were greeted with butler passed mimosas and Savannah's own Pink House pimento cheese straws. Folks left well wishes and signatures on a custom framed song sheet and left words of wisdom and giggles for the new parents.

Some of our event partners and friends helped provide some of the decor making this shower nothing shy of details with beautiful linen, gold chargers, wooden chairs, beautiful flowers, and pictures to remember the affair! Berkeley Hall served delicious Shrimp n Grits followed by a fabulous Grilled Chicken Bibb Salad. If you are like me and love desserts, the dessert table was Heaven. The options were endless; star sugar cookies, chocolate tuxedo cups, a cake with two delicious flavors, and macaroons to take home as favors. Minette Rushing out did herself with the cake making a chocolate cake filled with peanut butter and chocolate ganache and another layer of pound cake filled with salted caramel and butter cream frosting. Of course we had to try both!

Thank you to all who helped organize and host! It was such a treat to be a guest. We send our love to the Pepper Family!

The Torch Relay For Children's Miracle Network

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, November 02, 2016

The month of October has been an unexpected month, full of events that we did not plan. With Hurricane Matthew devastating our beloved lowcountry and having to postpone a couple of weddings, it's been a month full of changes! But as life teaches us, there are constant changes and turbulent times. It is how folks react to certain change that is admirable and inspiring.

As many of you know, the Spencer Family supports the Children's Miracle Network Foundation and contributes to the Torch Relay 5k walk/run fundraiser at the Marriott Surfwatch. This year it is even more close to their hearts as they had a personal trial with the death of an infant in their family this past year. Harlow Raegan Spencer was only on this earth for a short time, but deeply impacted the people that instantly loved her. This year we are walking in memory of Harlow and could not be more honored and touched to join Team Harlow with our friends and family.

A message from Harlow's parents, Amy and Dusty Spencer:

Dusty and I have been proud supporters of the Children's Miracle Network over the past several years. Every year, a walk is put on at Marriott Surfwatch Vacation Club in Hilton Head, SC that sponsors this cause- and monies donated are used for CMN families at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, GA. That alone is a reason that this cause is important to us, as we have a family in the area that if needed they would benefit from those contributions. This year, the walk at Surfwatch will be on Monday, November 28th registration starting at 4:00pm. Dusty and I, along with friends and family will be walking in honor of our Harlow Raegan- our precious baby girl that didn't quite make it to a CMN hospital, a jet from Shands was on its way at the time of Harlow's passing. We can't imagine the difficulties families face when children need specialized care, but are so thankful for the help that CMN provides.

We deeply admire Dusty and Amy's strength and their ability to turn tragedy into helping others and support a beyond deserving cause. The Torch Relay has raised more than $11 million for CMN Hospitals Nationwide. We are looking forward to growing this number and walking some turkey off on November 28th at the Marriott Surfwatch. If you would like to be part of this fabulous event please join our team or kindly make a donation to Team Harlow: http://torch.convio.net/site/TR?px=1004145&pg=personal&fr_id=1088&et=OUc8qMJMI9-z3AjCj3ZqIw&s_tafId=1175

Vendor Spotlight: Cru Catering

Spencer Special Events - Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Our mouths are watering, and yours will be too after you read this blog! We are so excited to work with Cru Catering from Charleston on a fall wedding, that we had to interview and share with our friends! Catering Director Reilly Mariotti from the Cru Crew kindly gave us the scoop!

SSE: Your food displays look like a work of art, where do you find inspiration to be innovative in your displays?

Reilly Mariotti: Our clients are truly our greatest inspiration. We want to accentuate their vision, not detract from it. We also have a very creative team and love bouncing ideas off of one another.

SSE: What would you say the food trend is this year for events?

RM: We've had more and more clients this year that are extremely adventurous with their flavors and menus. Unique, customized menus (with dishes that serve a significance to the bride and groom) are definitely a trend, and one that we love!

SSE: If you could create a dream menu for an event what would it consist of?

RM: That's tough being I love all types of food! Mine would be a very expansive menu consisting of French, Aisian, Italian and Mediterranean flavors. Fresh seafood and clean flavor profiles appeal to me, allowing the ingredients to shine through without masking flavors with too many components.

SSE: Do a lot of clients know what they want for their menu selection, or is it more of a collaboration?

RM: It's definitely a bit of a collaboration. We're very fortunate that we attract clients and planners that are knowledgeable about food, and it allows us the opportunity to bring new ideas to the table.

SSE: Does Cru have a specialty or signature dish?

RM: Our mac and chees is our most well-known and popular menu item (it truly is delicious!), but we are a well rounded company that loves exploring new flavor profiles and presentations.

SSE: Do you have a favorite event that Cru catered for, or one that stands out from a food perspective?

RM: An event that will stay with me is a wedding we catered for two Italian trained chefs, with a complete classic Italian menu. It was a multi-course meal, and from start to finish I loved that menu.

SSE: And lastly, is Cru Catering willing to travel?

RM: Of course! I'm still waiting for someone to ask us to travel to Fiji. :)

Real Wedding: Deanna and Dom

Spencer Special Events - Monday, August 22, 2016

It is such a special touch when a couple wants to make an impact on others on their wedding day; and finds a way to help an organization they are so passionate about! We are proud to share Deanna and Dominic on the blog today as they donated to help rescue dogs in lieu of wedding favors. These precious dogs were on display as their table numbers for guests to see their mission and cuteness!

Along with being selfless, they both had contagious smiles throughout the entire day. JOY! Deanna looked absolutely stunning in her lace gown, and how about that cascading bouquet? Pastels with an accent of gold, candlelight, and Colleton River as a backdrop made for the perfectly soft romantic garden wedding last fall.

Real Wedding: Lizzie and Nick

Spencer Special Events - Thursday, August 18, 2016

Oh my goodness!! This couple beams with love, we could browse at these gorgeous photos all day! Not only are they a beautiful couple (inside and out), but they were so much fun, kind and gracious to work with. Lizzie and Nick certainly integrated their families during their special day and you could certainly feel the love. We specifically admired the close special relationship of the Bride, Lizzie and her sweet Mother, Mrs. Lewis, we had such a pleasure dreaming up all of the details and working with them on a magical wedding weekend. See what the ladies have to say when reflecting back on the planning process.

Was there a special mother-daughter moment during the planning stages?

Lizzie Devine (Bride): Honestly, the whole planning process was a bonding experience for us both. We were constantly emailing, texting sending photos, and calling each other with new updates or ideas. Also, when I was getting worn down, she was able to pick me up and vice versa. I'd say my most favorite time during the planning with my mom was during my dress fittings - she was with me during every one and it was a special time for us both!

Cindy Lewis (MOB): The most special moment was our first visit to look for wedding dresses in Charleston. When Lizzie put on her first dress, I cried and knew my little girl was getting married. She looked so beautiful.

Did you wear any special items of your Moms or family in your wedding wardrobe?

LD: I wore an aqua marine diamond ring that was my grandmothers. My mom redid the ring for me years ago and it's always been a special piece that reminds me of her. My ring bearer's pillow was made from one of my grandma's old doilies. And this isn't technically from a wedding wardrobe, but I had gardenias in my bouquet - it's what my mom mostly had in hers!

Where did you find your vision and inspiration for decor and details of the wedding?

LD: Most of my inspiration came from magazines or Pinterest pictures I found that I was drawn to. I knew I wanted a lace dress, lots of gold details, and candles - the rest was filled in throughout the process. Another thing that helped me focus in on the " theme" was when Amanda asked me to describe my perfect wedding in 3 words. My 3 words were elegant, magical, and romantic. I think we did a pretty good job.

CL: Lizzie knew what she wanted - romantic and magical. Through pinterest, she was able to communicate to Amanda what she wanted to achieve. Amanda and her crew did a "magical" job creating just that.

Would you say you guys have similar styles?

LD: Yes I'd say we do. Mom knows my style - spot on. She is the one who still sends me my favorite clothes. My mom helped to guide the wedding into the style she knew I had envisioned.

CL: I think if I was getting married today, my dream wedding would be Lizzie's. It was magical and romantic surrounded by wonderful friends and family.

Did you have a favorite moment from the day?

LD: Yes - saying my vows to Nick! That's what it was really all about. And that feeling right after the wedding when we could take a deep breath, realize I just married the man of my dreams, and that I had everyone I loved surrounding us and ready to help us celebrate.

CL: My favorite moment was when Lizzie, her Dad and I were driving over to the ceremony and Lizzie said she was hungry. I think she was just nervous but we ordered french fries for all of the bridesmaids and they were gone in a minute.

Any advice for future Brides and Mother of the Brides?

LD: Start planning early! I think this helped ease a lot of stressors early on. Definitely pick a theme of colors and how you want the wedding to feel in order to set the tone for the rest of your planning. Lastly - have fun with it. It can be a fun experience if you let it be!

CL: My advice would be to hire Amanda and her team! They are the ones that helped make Lizzie's dream wedding a reality. Her attention to detail made the weekend run so smoothly. It was a dream come true.

Vendor Spotlight: Savannah Special Events by Ranco

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, July 20, 2016

One of our favorite steps in the planning process is event design. We love all of the fine details it takes to create a dream wedding. This would not be possible with out the help from our vendor friends, Savannah Special Events by Ranco. These folks are outsanding! Whether its putting up a custom tent in our client's backyard through trees, delivering hundreds of chairs and rental furniture, or supplying beautiful china and flatware they do it all. And if they do not have something, they will get it for you!

We also know how many of y'all love outdoor soirees and they ease our mind in the event of bad weather. For that we are forever grateful!

One of our clients just had a fabulous lowcountry backyard wedding in Spanish Wells. They wanted a tent that would enclose the yard while incorporating the trees within the tent and still have the water view. We knew this was a job for Ranco. See what kind of words our clients, the Thomas family had to say:

"Ranco did a 10.5 on a scale of 10. The 10 is based on their perfect execution, the .5 is based on them going above and beyond. Three days before the wedding they erected the tent and the project came alive. Every step of the way Ranco and its dedicated employees made sure the tent was exactly as we wanted and perfectly designed and executed. The day before the wedding they installed two additional standard tents to cover bartender locations. As the forecast for rain on the wedding day was 100% Ranco installed a tent on the property next door for the wedding ceremony THE DAY OF THE WEDDING which was sufficient for two hundred plus guests. While it rained six inches on the day of the wedding not a drop of water made it through the custom tent. The crew totally respected our property and made great efforts not to damage the lawn or plant material. All of us HIGHLY recommend Ranco for their imagination, design, and execution of this tent and related supplies and the way in which they handled the customer relations and concerns. Cheers for a job well done by the entire staff from inception, through design and implementation."

Ranco is always willing to work with us on different ideas and the entire staff is impeccable. We truly can't give them enough praise for all they do. Rain or shine you will be happy to have Savannah Special Events by Ranco on your team!
