A Wedding Weekend

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Many of our Spencer Special Events weddings are destination ones. Our couples grew up vacationing here on Hilton Head Island, or their parents have a second home here, or it's an area they've always wanted to visit! As a result, most of the guests are from out of town so when we are planning and designing, we plan a whole weekend full of fun.

The welcome party is a trend we have been seeing over the last couple of years. Rehearsal dinners are still very popular but are growing more intimate, and are occurring more and more on Thursdays. This leaves room on Friday night for a party for all the out of town guests! A bit more relaxed than the wedding reception, the decor, music, and food are toned down but certainly set the stage for the weekend.

One of our dearest couples, Kara and Justin, were married this May. The weekend started on Thursday with a wedding rehearsal at the church and then intimate dinner on the veranda at The Dye Clubhouse at Colleton River Plantation. A Floral Affair carefully hung lanterns above the long table, overlooking the majestic river and golf course, and guests dined on Chef Robert Wysong's fabulous cuisine. Hand cut palm fronds served as place mats and beautifully hand lettered place cards were tied to silver palm tree bottle openers. Two fun details we just loved and carried the theme throughout the weekend.

On Friday, Spencer Special Events designed and planned a welcome party at The Westin Oceanfront Hotel. All out of town guests enjoyed delicious food, music, and a beautiful beach front view.

On Wedding Day,  Kara and Justin were married in a beautiful ceremony at Providence Presbyterian Church and the reception was held at The Colleton River Plantation's Nicklaus Clubhouse. We can't share all the beautiful details yet, (stay tuned!) but here's a sneak peak of the gorgeous couple by Donna Von Bruening Photographers.

When planning your destination wedding, it's important to consider the whole weekend of events. Spencer Special Events also coordinates golf outings (and even family tournaments!), brunches, yoga on the beach, spa appointments, and bridal teas and luncheons. We can help set up beach games, lounging by the pool, and so much more.

How many events you choose to have is up to you -- and Spencer Special Events is here to help you along the way!

Spotted...

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, November 06, 2013

Spotted:  Amanda Spencer, event designer, master planner, and owner of Spencer Special Events on the scene of two flat out to die for weddings. We snapped a photo of her Saturday on the 18th green of the breathtaking Harbour Town Golf Links, as she made sure every detail was perfect for Elizabeth & RJ. From the moving performance of The Lord's Prayer by The Voices of El Shaddai to the custom furniture design, food stations from around the world, and one of kind lighting installation at the reception, this wedding was full of unique and personal details that everyone will remember. We even witnessed the Father of the Bride thanking Amanda for making the wedding weekend so perfect in his toast to the bride and groom. A true testament to how close Amanda becomes to the families she works with, this blogger just had to share some quick snap shots...

We also spotted her the week before at The Westin Oceanfront Pavilion mid-set up for an incredibly elegant beach wedding for Stephen and Vicki. From the rustic door escort card display, custom designed shoe valet, stunning drapery and fabulous cake, this wedding weekend was nothing short of epic.

We'll wait for the exceptionally talented Landon Jacob Productions to share photos of all the exceptional details and smiling faces.

Wedding Day Hair

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, October 23, 2013

At Spencer Special Events, we love seeing how our brides choose to wear their hair on their wedding day. The hair really completes the look you are going for. From classic and elegant, bohemian and chic, to fashion forward and Avante Garde, there's a style for everyone. We've rounded up some of our favorites styles and asked Megan Wayt of Hautelocks provided by Spencer Special Events, to share tips for your wedding day hair appointment.

We loved all of these Spencer Special Events brides' hair on their wedding day! Aren't they gorgeous?

  • Side swept, down and curly by Megan Wayt, Hautelooks for Spencer Special Events. Photo by Donna Von Bruening.
  • Low and loose updo. Photo by Amelia + Dan.
  • Classic wrapped bun by Martin Spradlin, Atlanta. Photo by Marcus Krause Photography
  • Side swept low pony tail. Photo by Landon Jacob Production
  • Curly up-do from Jenn Gable, House of Color. Photo by Nate Henderson Photography

Here are our top 5 tips for perfect wedding day hair!

  • Don't stray too far away from your natural style. You want to look like YOU on your wedding day!
  • Schedule a trial appointment at least 1 week prior to try out different styles. Bring several photos to help explain your vision.
  • Take photos at your trial of your final style!
  • If you are planning an up-do, don't wash your hair the day of the wedding (a little grease helps!)
  • Don't be shy if you don't love it. Speak up and let your hair stylist know what you don't love so she can fix it.  The last thing you want is to be disappointed.

Mid-Fall Recap

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Whew! What a fall so far for Spencer Special Events! With a Bat Mitzvah celebration, a styled photo shoot, a fabulous wedding at Haig Point on Daufuskie Island and a perfect wedding day on the May River, we have been having a wonderful couple of weeks. Here's a look back with some snapshots as we wait for the professional pictures and a few of our favorite details. It's always so fun to see months and months of planning come together so well and to work with so many of our top notch vendor friends to pull it off!

Our darling client hired us to design and plan her Bat Mitzvah celebration at the end of September. We created a wonder-world for teens with Palmetto Kettlecorn action station, Pino-Gelato cart, Airbrush t-shirts, color coordinated Cotton Candy station and giant candy bar with all of her faves! The DJ and entertaining dancers had the crowd going late into the night. And all the details - from the stationery, escort cards, cake, to flowers, were coordinated perfectly in a modern beach soiree theme.

Our styled photo shoot, shot by Landon Jacob Productions, at Colleton River Plantation at the end of September was a great way to really get creative. We worked with some of the area’s most talented wedding industry professionals to collaborate on a luxurious styled wedding at Colleton River Plantation. Chef Robert Wysong's food creations were cutting edge (we love the mini-cheese burger placed on the straw of a bloody mary!) and the florals by Garden on the Square knocked our socks off. Not to mention Savannah Custom Cakes' gold dusted cake was to die for! TEC made the lighting perfect and Party Tables linen and drapery completely transformed the ballroom. You'll be blown away to see Emma J Design's stationery suite, SKINZIN and Hautelocks by Megan Wayt who made our bride even more beautiful (if that was possible!) The set up would not have been complete without Amazing Event Rentals providing the gold chavari chairs and chargers! What an incredible team.

On October 5th, Spencer Special Events was a part of Christin and Rob's wedding at the gorgeous Haig Point on Daufuskie Island, just a short ferry ride away from Hilton Head Island. Guest were transported around the island in golf carts. After the ceremony where the couple exchanged their own wedding vows, everyone was surprised by The Voices of El Shaddai, a joyful gullah choir. The reception was held at the Haig Point Clubhouse with top notch food, a hit band, and beautiful florals by the Flowers by Freshcuts ladies. Guests enjoyed a gourmet espresso bar in the library provided by The Corner Perk, complete with latte art, a unique detail we just loved!

On October 12th, Weston and Rhoades were married at the Church of The Cross in Bluffton on a truly perfect October Lowcountry day. Cocktails and the reception took place at the bride's parents home on the majestic May River. A spectacular tent was constructed by Savannah Special Events by Ranco complete with Party Tables flowing drapery, TEC's unique chandeliers, and a focal lighting/floral sculpture on the dance floor. A Floral Affair's florals and attention to details were fabulous as always. An 8-tier wedding cake by Custom Cakes adored with thousands of handmade sugar flowers was a focal point for guests and a real show stopper. Guests enjoyed a blue grass band and boiled peanuts for cocktails and an 11-piece dynamite band to dance the night away. Susan Mason Catering provided an extensive dinner buffet and late night food, it was delish!

We are so honored to have the pleasure to work with so many wonderful folks recently. From brides and their grooms, fabulous families, guests, and hundreds of industry professionals and vendors, it's been so much fun seeing everything come together just as we've planned and worked so hard to make come true. But we are just getting started, kids! More fun-filled events on the way...

Happy Fall Y'all!

The Children's Miracle Network Torch Relay 2013

Spencer Special Events - Monday, October 14, 2013

Save the date!  The Torch Relay for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals is coming to Hilton Head Island, SC on Monday, November 4th, 2013. Spencer Special Events is so proud to be sponsoring a team for the third year in a row!

The event is a 5K walk or run on the beach of Hilton Head, right by the Marriott Surf Watch resort. We like to bring the boys in a wagon, wear our comfy shoes, and walk with our friends.  At the end of the walk, there's a party catered by local restaurants and a band. It's a big party with friends and family!

We feel lucky everyday that our children are healthy and cannot imagine what families with sick children have to endure. Our prayers and thougths are with them and we hope to alievate some pain with this simple 5K walk. It doesn't seem like it's enough but it is a start.

Our goal is to raise $2,000 and we have some work to do!  So we hope you will help support a great local Hilton Head cause and join us in our fundraising efforts. Spread the word! Share this with your friends. Help us reach our goal and support a very worthy cause.

Join us! Find out more here. You can donate on our page or contact us for more information.

Daddy's Little Girl

Spencer Special Events - Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Often times people have a favorite moment during a wedding. We've heard many say that they love watching the groom's facial expression when he sees his bride for the first time.  That's a good one for sure, but we think a close rival is that special moment when the father of the bride sees his daughter for the first time. We tear up every time.

When our Spencer Special Events couple, Andrea and Taylor, married last June, we couldn't get enough of Andrea's thoughtful tribute to her Daddy and the minutes they shared before she walked down the aisle.  In an embroidered handkerchief (which we're pretty sure he'll keep forever!) he read this:

Andrea's father's expression, captured by Scott Hopkins Photography, was priceless.

It's been said that a woman falls in love with her father first, and all men after him will have to measure up. What a tall drink of water for many men! We can't imagine how difficult it would be to "give your daughter away" but think the feeling is summed up by country singer, Blake Shelton, pretty well in the hit song, "I loved her first."

What will you dance to with your father?

To all those daddy's little girls out there, this one is for you!

Small wedding details not to forget!

Spencer Special Events - Tuesday, September 10, 2013

When you are planning a wedding, you can be so focused on the big things like a dynamite venue, a perfect photographer, a scrumptious menu, and the gown of your dreams, that sometimes the very little details are last on your mind.  At Spencer Special Events, the details are our favorite part!  Here are four small details that shouldn't be overlooked.

1.  A pretty dress hanger! You spend thousands of dollars on a dream wedding gown and you want your photographer to capture that gorgeous beauty hanging before you put it on. For this reason, don't overlook the importance of a pretty hanger! There are a variety of options from "Bride", your new last name, and "Mrs." -- just be sure you don't have an ugly wire hanger or get stuck grabbing one from the hotel closet.

2.  Making it kid-friendly (if children are invited!) If you are having kids attend the wedding, make sure you have a game plan for those precious kiddos.   At Spencer Special Events, we like to have something for the kids during the ceremony like crayons and coloring books.  At the reception during speeches, skip a flower in their napkin and add a lollipop that coordinates with your design. You're sure to be a hit!  If you are having a kid-friendly wedding, don't forget to make it kid-friendly!

3. A special cake knife or toasting flutes. Often times these are passed down from generation to generation, or received as a wedding gift.   Give them to us before the big day and we will make sure they are waiting for you at your cake table.

4. A way to remember family members that can't be with you! Old family photos in elegant frames around the cocktail hour or reception can be a sentimental way to have your grandparents or loved ones with you on your big day.

We at Spencer Special Events will make sure that all of your details are covered and perfectly placed. It really is our favorite part (aside from working with our wonderful brides and their sweet families!)
